The humble shed has had quite the makeover in recent years. These days a shed can refer to any garden building from a summer house to an artist’s studio, yoga hut to home office, man cave to she-shed. Of course, the most common use for a shed is still the humble garden shed – a place to store the lawnmower, outdoor furniture and gardening bits and bobs. With such a huge variation in the types of sheds, it can often be confusing to know what phrasing or terms to use – this helpful guide will have you a shed-spotting know-it-all in no time!
Garden Shed
The most common shed type, found in most UK gardens and usually home to gardening equipment and lawn chairs. From a mini shed with just enough room for a bicycle and plant pots up to a garage sized storage space, garden sheds are available in practically any size.
Potting Shed
The next step up the shed-property-ladder is a potting shed – a shed with one side glazed like a greenhouse, for growing seedlings and tending to plants. There are many variations of garden and potting sheds, the size and shape determined by the garden size, personal preference and budget – whilst the design is usually quite traditional, modern designs are coming into favour.
Lean To, Pent and Apex Variations
Sheds and potting sheds can come as lean-tos or have a lean to combined into the design, this is often helpful for people with a wood burner to store logs. Pent and Apex refers to the roof of the shed – Apex rooves have two sloping sides that meet in the middle while a Pent roof features a single slope with the highest point on the side of the doorway. Choosing between Pent and Apex will be determined by what you’ll be using your shed for and the location of it in the garden.
Summerhouses and Studios
More extravagant garden structures like summerhouses and studios come in all shapes, sizes, styles and colours. Featuring more windows than a standard shed to allow in light and create a nice atmosphere, choose a combination of fixed and opening windows depending on the location of the structure and how secure it needs to be. Summerhouses and studios can include verandas and canopies, allowing you to enjoy your garden no matter what the weather.
