All the latest company and industry news, gardening tips and interesting installations.
Decking is a raised even platform of timber in your garden. Perfect for relaxing (in a deckchair, perhaps) or entertaining a few guests. Decking can be built over uneven or sloping ground that is unsuitable for paving. However, sometimes people just like the aesthetics of solid timber decking and install it next to their homes as an extra outdoor living area for the summer. This week, we’re answering a few decking FAQs.
What wood should I choose for my decking?
Your choice here is between softwoods like pine and spruce and hardwoods such as oak and elm. If you choose to have your decking constructed from softwood, we will treat it (coat it with a protective wood stain). To keep your decking in good condition, you will need to recoat it periodically and make sure any scratches or chips are immediately dried and treated with stain. Hardwoods do not need treating.
How big should my decking be?
This is entirely up to you. we can build your decking to the desired square meterage in any shape you request. We have built decking around hot tubs and around swimming pools. The size of the job doesn’t worry us and we give the same high-quality finish to all of our work.
Won’t weeds grow up through my decking?
All decking installed by Norfolk Prestige Fencing is hand-built over a breathable membrane that will prevent unwanted and ugly weeds from poking up through your decking.
Isn’t decking slippery when wet?
Decking was used on ships long before it was a garden feature. There are all sorts of ways to ensure that the wood doesn’t become slippery. Chat to us about which one would work best for you.
Do I need planning permission for decking?
In almost all cases, no. If you plan to deck more than half of your garden or the decking is more than 30cm off the ground then you should seek advice from the planning department of your local council before you call in the carpenters as you may need planning permission, building regulations approval or both.
How long will my decking last?
We expect a hardwood or properly maintained softwood decking system installed by our team to last upwards of 25 years.
