Sturdy Replacements for Damaged Fences

We’re back from our seasonal break and looking forward to a busy 2024. At this time of year, we get lots of calls about replacing damaged fencing with hand built sturdy fences that will see you in good stead for years to come.

Fences enhance the security and privacy of your home but, over time, their functionality and appearance can be compromised by damage. Some of the common causes of fence damage are:

  • Storm damage. Strong winds, heavy rain, hail, and snow can wreak havoc on older fences. Storms can cause your fence to crack, warp, bend, or even collapse. If your fence has been severely damaged by a storm, you may need to replace some or all of the fence panels, posts and rails.
  • Frost damage: Cold temperatures cause the ground to expand and contract with every freeze and thaw. Over long periods of time, this can affect the stability of your fence by pushing or pulling your fence posts out of alignment. Frost can also cause cracks or splits in your fence materials, especially if they are porous or brittle.
  • Damage from rot. Wood is a natural material that will decay over time due to exposure to moisture and fungi. Rot can affect the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of your fence, making it weak and unsightly. To prevent rot, you should treat your wood fence with a preservative and sealant, and keep it away from direct contact with the ground. If your fence has signs of rot, such as softness, discoloration, or holes, you should replace the affected parts as soon as possible.
  • Older fences: Fences have a limited lifespan, although this can be expanded by choosing high quality materials and regular maintenance. Older fences may start to show signs of wear and tear, such as fading, peeling or cracking. And as a result become more susceptible to the kinds of damage from storms, frost and rot outlined above.
  • Vehicle damage: Accidents can and do happen! If your fence has been damaged by a third party, you should contact the driver or their insurance company to claim compensation. But (anecdotally) most of these accidents are caused by the owner of the car and the fence! Replace damaged sections of fence as soon as possible to restore its function and appearance.
